Former Sunderland striker returns

Darlington have today signed forward Andrew Nelson for the second time.

Andrew, 23, started his career at Sunderland, and in the 2018-19 season whilst on loan to us, scored six goals in five games – including two on his debut at Chorley -- before he returned to Sunderland. He was then transferred to Scottish Premier club Dundee and scored on his debut for them against Hearts.

He was released by the Scottish club in the summer of 2020 after making 39 appearances and he joined Torquay in the National League, but three weeks after joining, he suffered a knee injury and was unable to play for them last season.

He was freed in the summer, and joined us for pre-season training whilst receiving treatment for his injury from physio Danny O'Connor. He also made a brief sub appearance in one of our friendlies.

Darlington manager Alun Armstrong said; “Andrew had a great time here before, and hopefully he can score a few goals for us. He’s still recovering from injury but hopefully he’ll be back to his best soon.”

He will have the number 21 as his squad number.

You can watch an interview with “Nella” here.

We would like to wish Nella all the best in his stay with us -- and hope we see more scoring performances like this in the 5-1 win over York City.
