Darlington’s new signings Mark Beck and Josh Gillies both scored in Quakers’ last pre-season friendly against Barnsley behind closed doors today.

The pair were both in target in the first half as Quakers built up a 3-0 lead by half time, with Barnsley’s second string pulling two goals back in the second half.

Beck headed the first goal of the afternoon from a Josh Gillies free kick, then after a Barnsley defender neatly put a Gary Brown cross into his own goal, Gillies scored the third with a curling free kick.

Virtually all of Quakers’ first team squad got a run out, and manager Martin Gray admitted afterwards that he was happy with the performance and the pre-season preparation in general.

Amongst Barnsley’s coaching staff was former Darlington keeper David Preece, who is goalkeeping coach.

Quakers start the Vanarama National League North season with an away game at Altrincham on Saturday.
