Darlington striker Amar Purewal has been named in the Panjab squad to play in the Conifa World Cup in Abkhazia, Georgia, later this week.

Amar has overcome the medial ligament injury that forced him to miss a year of action, and he came through a loan spell with Harrogate RA and a substitute appearance for Quakers without any ill effects.

“I cannot wait to fly out there,” he said. “It isn’t every footballer who has the opportunity to play for his country. I feel pretty fit, so hopefully I can make a good impact.”

Amar’s brother Arjun, who scored in our first ever Northern League game, and now plays for Bishop Auckland, has also been chosen.

The other countries taking part are: Abkhazia, Chagos Islands, Kurdistan, Northern Cyprus, Padania, Raetia, Sapmi, Somaliland, Szekely Land, United Koreans in Japan, and Western Armenia. Amar’s team, which is ranked 12th in the world, is in Group D with Sapmi and Somaliland.

Matches start this weekend, with the final due to be played on June 5th.

Best of luck, Amar!
