Young defender earns contract after impressive trial period
Darlington are pleased to announce the signing of Ciaran Thompson after a successful trial period with the club, subject to National League and FA clearance.
Ciaran, 21, has impressed in his time on trial, playing in a variety of positions, but he is primarily known as a defender who has featured in all pre-season games so far and now has earned a contract with the club.
The Blyth-born defender started his career at Newcastle United, where he signed as a 13-year-old and spent eight years impressing in the academy set-up, where he would go on to captain the U21s side and feature in many games, including in the National League Cup, EFL Trophy and UEFA Youth League. Ciaran would play in friendlies for the first team in May 2024 against an Australian A-League XI
Assistant Manager Terry Mitchell spoke about his delight to have Ciaran signed on: “We’re really delighted to get Ciaran on board. He’ll really add to our quality and has great versatility. He can play anywhere across the back four, at wing back, and can also drop in to a deep midfield role if needed.
"As soon as we spoke to him, he was willing to come in; he’s mixed with the group really well and has performed well in the games to date. As soon as we offered something, he was delighted to come in even though he had some options at a higher level. He’s had some great grounding at Newcastle, and we’re delighted to have him with us.”
Everyone at Darlington is thrilled to have you, Ciaran. We are excited to see you in Quaker colours!
