Quakers kicked off attacking the open end.

Altrincham had an early chance when a Darlo clearance was headed forward for Josh Hancock to try his luck from 35 yards, but Maddison got down well to his right and held on to his shot.

Quakers gained a corner on 3 minutes, but Terry Galbraith’s inswinger was held by the keeper.

Hancock then made a good run and slipped the ball to John Johnston, who curled a right foot effort wide.

Quakers though steadily got into the game, and good touches by O’Hanlon and Styche came to nothing.

Quakers were forced into a sub on 14 minutes when Terry Galbraith limped off, and was replaced by Dom Collins.

Altrincham had a chance on 16 minute when a corner came in from the right for Jones to head over, then Hancock, from the edge of the box, scuffed a left foot shot wide.

Williams of Altrincham was booked for pulling back Elliott who had intercepted the ball on the halfway line.

Altrincham had another chance when Hulme spread the ball out to the left for Owen Dale to fire across the face of goal, then Hulme got clean through, but Maddison saved well at his feet.

But Altrincham scored on 30 minutes. Stephen Thompson was ruled to have handled the ball as he tried to block a cross from the left -- it looked a harsh decision -- and the referee pointed to the spot from where Johnston sent Maddison the wrong way. Johnston was then booked for over-celebrating.

Quakers had a chance when Styche turned well on the ball inside the Altrincham box, and tried to slot the ball into the bottom corner, but a defender managed to clear.

But Alty continue to threaten, and Burn made a couple of timely interceptions, while Hulme turned quickly and fired just over the top.

Half time:

Darlington 0 Altrincham 1

Sub at half time Saunders for Collins, with Ainge going into the back four. Collins has an ankle injury.

Altrincham went 2-0 up after 49 minutes when Jordan Hulme picked the ball up in the inside left channel, ran towards goal, and stroked the ball right footed past a defender and Maddison into the net.

It was 3-0 on 58 minutes when Hancock won possession inside the Darlington half, and set up Hulme, who ran through and slotted the ball past Maddison.

Quakers response was to take off Hughes and send on Syers.

They nearly pulled a goal back on 63 minutes when Nicholson found Saunders on the left, and the striker’s low cross was nearly turned into his own net by a defender.

And another chance came along from an Ainge header off a right wing corner that the keeper touched over the bar.

They were denied right at the end when Trotman crossed from the right for Saunders to head powerfully towards goal, but the keeper pushed his effort against the bar, but by then the game was lost.
