Darlington fans are being asked to wear a cap to the match at Stourbridge this Saturday – to celebrate the life of a Midlands-based fan.

Lance Ireland died just over four years ago but was a well known character following Darlington matches on the road – and also regularly at home.

He was a popular member of DAFTS – Darlington Away Far Travelling Supporters – for a number of seasons, and was easily recognised in his trademark flat cap.

As a tribute, supporters had a Flat Cap Day at Kidderminster Harriers a few months after he died.

Now, with Darlo playing matches back in the Midlands again, DAFTS have decided to have a second Flat Cap Day.

Lance was born in Worcestershire - so having the match in the heart of the Black Country at Stourbridge is perfect.

Fans are staying over for the weekend in Birmingham and some of Lance’s old friends will be going to the game.

Lance was always a very generous fund-raiser for Darlington in the past – even in his local pub in Birmingham – and sponsored shirts and had collections.

So, DAFTS are also hoping to raise a bit of money during the weekend in his memory.
