Haughton schoolchildren fundraising for trip to Kenya on Saturday

Selling sweet cones to raise money

Pupils in Darlington are busy fundraising for a life-changing African adventure which will help local children with their learning.
Fourteen Year 10 children from Haughton Academy, Darlington, need to raise £2,000 each to take part in a trip to Kenya next year. They will team up with a school in Africa, work with them on school renovations and clean water projects and share their UK learning experiences to develop the African children’s language and sporting skills.
Pupils and staff have already completed a series of fundraisers raising around £2,000 since September. They are also appealing for sponsorship from the business community to help meet some of the costs.

As part of their fundraising efforts pupils will be selling sweet cones at Saturday's home game against Rushall Olympic.

Teacher Jo Malone said: “I believe such a cultural exchange will be truly life-changing for our pupils and the African children.
“Having to raise the funding themselves will be a test of their tenacity and the trip will broaden their horizons and boost their resilience. I’m certain it will be a culture shock, will open their eyes to how other children live and help them recognise how fortunate we all are to live in Darlington.”
For Brooke Jenkinson the trip is an opportunity to “give something back”.
“I thought it was a good way to show that I care,” the 14-year-old said. “I’m a bit nervous but more excited about a completely new experience and I think it will also be good for my CV. I do think I will come back a different person.”
Classmate Charlie Taylor agreed. “I’m really looking forward to going to Africa,” said Charlie, also 14. “I’m a bit worried about the wildlife, especially if there are any big spiders, but it is something that will be a great experience and that will make me appreciate my life here.”
