Jay-Jay Okocha is the latest big name to be included in the MarathonBet #NonLeagueChallenge squad to play Darlington on Sunday.
Jay-Jay played for Borussia Neunkirchen, Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahce and Paris St Germain before he signed for Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2002.
He led Bolton to the final of the League Cup in 2004 (when they lost to Middlesbrough), and the Bolton fans took him to their hearts, printing T shirts saying “Jay-Jay – so good, they named him twice.”
He started 123 games for Bolton and scored 18 goals for them in four seasons before joining Qatar.
He is one of the best footballers ever to come from the African continent. He was also capped 75 times by Nigeria, scoring 14 goals. He helped his country win the African Cup of Nations in 1994, and was Nigerian footballer of the year seven times between 1995 and 2005. He was the BBC African footballer of the year twice, the best player in the 2004 African Cup of Nations, the player of the month in the Premiership in November 2003, and scored the goal of the month in April 2003.
