Quakers looking for much-needed victory

Marine 2 Darlington 1

Goals: Beck 29 mins 0-1, McAleny 32 mins 1-1, Jolley 73 mins, 2-1

Attendance 1141

Darlington surrendered the lead and were beaten at Marine.

Quakers played better than they did at Chorley in midweek in some ways. They took the lead with a Mark Beck penalty, but three minutes later failed to work the offside trap correctly and left a man unmarked for Marine’s equaliser. Marine scored the winner in the second half with a good effort, although there were question marks over Darlington's defending again.

Quakers remain in the bottom two of the table, and have a fortnight's break before the next league game because of FA Cup action at Redcar Town next Saturday.

Marine tried a short free kick into the area in the second minute, but Jonah Lowes was alert and put the ball out of play, and in their next attack Conor McAleny crossed low from the right and Ben Darby failed to connect ten yards out.

Fen Sinclair-Smith then picked the ball up on the right and crossed low for Darby to volley over, and on the next time he touched the ball he cut in from the right and fired into the side netting.

Quakers nearly scored with their first real attack on 10 minutes, Aidan Rutledge’s attempted ball into the box was cleared back to him, and after taking a touch, he curled a right footed effort over the keeper, but the ball came back off the crossbar.

Hayden Atkinson made a great run down the right past two defenders to get to the bye line, but his low cross was cut out,

Sinclair-Smith was seeing plenty of the ball, and again he picked the ball up on the right, but Ben Hedley managed to deflect his effort wide.

Quakers got a penalty on 29 minutes, when the ball was played into the box to Stanton, who turned and flicked the ball over the head of Leigh Whelan, who tripped him.

Mark Beck firmly scored from the spot for his second goal of the season.

But three minutes later, Marine were level, when McAleny was left unmarked to control a pass inside the Darlington box -- the offside trap failed to work -- and he sidefooted past Bobby Jones.

Quakers almost regained the lead when Paddy McLaughlin found space to hit a dipping left foot shot that Jack McIntyre saved at full stretch, but then at the other end, Jones also had to go full length to deny McAleny.

Jones then did well to punch away a left wing cross as Marine increased the pressure towards half time.

Half time: Marine 1 Darlington 1

McAleny threatened on the right straight after the restart, and Lowes did well to head his cross away on the six yard line.

Marine were awarded a penalty on 48 minutes when Atkinson was penalised for a shirt pull in the area at the far post, but Jones saved McAleny’s spot kick by diving low to his left -- his third penalty stop of the season!

Quakers had a half chance on 54 minutes when Walker drove a free kick into the area for Beck to nod down and Stanton volleyed first time over the bar.

Quakers made their first sub on 61 minutes, Ethan Fitzhugh coming on for Dylan Stephenson.

After Atkinson’s cross was held by McIntyre, Marine won a free kick in a central position 25 yards out, but the wall did its job.

Atkinson was then subbed by Ciaran Thompson on 69 minutes.

Marine went in front on 73 minutes,  Sub Charlie Jolley picked the ball up on the right just outside the area, and in space, curled it beyond Jones into the net.

They nearly got another when Sinclair-Smith got away on the break, but with Jones to beat, he sidefooted wide of the post.

Quakers made another sub, this time Tom Bryant coming on for Ben Hedley

Quakers pushed everyone forward late in the game for free kicks, but nothing dropped for them in the penalty area. Jones went up for a last minute free kick, but he couldn’t reach Stanton’s effort.
