The next home fixture was against Chester, a game remembered for being played in thick fog, yet Darlington managed to win 5-1, though not all of the supporters saw the goals due to the conditions. Quakers’ scorers were Jim Milner, Lance Robson (2), Bobby Baxter (p) and Keith Morton.

The game was played a week before the infamous FA Cup saga with Hull City began, which would require four replays to resolve before the Tigers eventually won the second round tie.
