Discussions between Darlington Rugby Football Club and Darlington 1883 Football Club concerning the proposed ‘ground share’ agreement at Blackwell Meadows to facilitate the return of Darlington Football Club to the town have continued and both clubs are pleased to report significant progress.

Michael Wilkinson, Chairman of Darlington Rugby Football Club outlined the progress made during recent talks with Darlington Football Club. Earlier today he acknowledged the support of Jenny Chapman, MP, and Darlington Borough Council and said, “On behalf of Darlington Rugby Football Club’s Board of Directors, I able to confirm that both clubs have made significant advances towards achieving an agreement that facilities the return of Darlington FC to its home town”, adding that there were still a number of crucial elements that had to concluded. These elements involve the two clubs, alongside their partner organisations, and include leasing of additional land, final release of grant and funding applications, planning permission and commercial agreements. Mr. Wilkinson concluded by stressing the significant progress made in the three previous weeks.

Dave Mills, Director of Darlington 1883 Ltd added, “I too have always welcomed the support from the town’s MP and the Darlington Borough Council. The ‘ground share’ process is complex but it is important to state that the Board of Directors of both parties are fully committed and determined to resolve all matters to a satisfactory conclusion. In order to take into account the time required for the continuation of these discussions, Darlington Football Club requested an extension to the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF) grant offer. Unfortunately, within the FSIF rules they are unable to grant an extension and the offer has been withdrawn.

"However a further application will not be considered detrimental to any future FSIF funding application and when final agreements with DRFC have been reached and signed we have been encouraged by the FSIF to re-apply. The Board of Darlington 1883 Ltd is heartened by this encouragement. I am also determined to further galvanise the relationship that Darlington Football Club has with its Supporters Group, in its role of Corporate Director and majority shareholder. To this end John Tempest, Chair of the Darlington Football Club Supporters Group and representative of the Corporate Director, has been actively involved in the most recent discussions alongside me with the rugby club, and will continue to do so going forward. John said, “Both parties have worked hard to reach a sensible agreement that reflects the ups and downs of football success over the season.”
