Darlington manager Martin Gray said that he was “very proud” of the club’s young players after Quakers won 2-1 at Blyth in the Integro Doodson League Cup last night.
MG decided to field a mixture of youth and experience in his team, as well as new signing Wilson Kneeshaw.
“There were loads of plusses from the performance,” said MG.
“I was very proud of the youngsters who played in the game, especially in the last 15 minutes when we were holding on to a 2-1 lead.
“We had a 16 year old in goal, two 17 year olds at left back and right back, an 18 year old at centre half, and an 18 year old up front.
“Jordan Lee, who came on as sub up front, showed a lovely touch for his goal.
“It’s nice to know that on this display, the youngsters are capable of stepping up, although they know that they must continue to work hard.
“It’s great to work with the academy kids. They’re all willing to learn and take on board what we tell them, and understanding what stepping up to the next level is all about, and the commitment required to get there, is all part of their education.
“Going to Blyth and winning is some achievement, I’m proud of what we’ve achieved as a club after performances like this.”
Gray also gave Wilson Kneeshaw his debut after the paperwork was approved just a few hours before kick off at Croft Park.
“I thought he scored a great goal, and was always a threat.”
