Pitch Renovation Update Week 4

Update on the 70-day renovation programme at Blackwell Meadows

Week 4 Progress at Blackwell Meadows — as at Friday 13th June

We’re now four weeks into the 70-day renovation programme at Blackwell Meadows, and the pitch continues to take shape as we build towards the new season.

This week has seen further progress across several key areas of the works:

  • The grass is now being cut closer to its final match height, helping the surface strengthen and encouraging denser growth ahead of pre-season fixtures.
  • The first mowing stripes have been cut, giving the pitch its familiar matchday look as the grass thickens and establishes.
  • A further application of wetting agent was carried out on Wednesday 11th June, helping the surface retain moisture and supporting healthy growth as temperatures rise.
  • Additional fertiliser has been applied to both goalmouth areas to give these high-wear zones extra attention and promote even coverage.
  • The installation of the new irrigation tank has been slightly delayed, with work now scheduled to take place week commencing 15th June.

The upgraded irrigation system — which will play a vital role in maintaining the surface across the season — has been installed at a total cost of £12,500, with a grant funding application submitted to cover 70% of the cost. The remaining balance is being jointly funded by Darlington FC and Darlington RFC, reflecting the continued close partnership between both clubs at Blackwell Meadows.

How the pitch management works at Blackwell Meadows

With over 50 games played on the surface each season — covering both football and rugby fixtures — managing the pitch at Blackwell Meadows is a year-round challenge, particularly with the unpredictability of British weather.

Each year, ahead of the close season, Darlington FC and Darlington RFC jointly agree on an annual pitch maintenance budget, with costs shared 50/50 between the two clubs. This shared approach ensures that both clubs contribute equally to the upkeep and improvement of the playing surface.

The day-to-day management of the pitch is led by Nathan Waddup, who has been the Blackwell Meadows groundsman for the past three seasons. Nathan carries out the hands-on work on the pitch throughout the year, supported by Lee Dodsworth, Head of Grounds for Darlington RFC.

The two clubs also work closely together throughout the year, holding regular discussions on how best to optimise the management of the surface across both sports. With a demanding schedule of fixtures and ever-changing weather conditions, careful planning, ongoing investment, and year-round attention to detail are all essential in keeping the playing surface in the best possible condition.
