Darlington responded well. The tempo lifted and the atmosphere followed. The hosts began to contain their visitors but relied heavily on an outstanding display from goalkeeper Dom Flood, who made a series of key saves to keep the score at 1–0.
The game turned in the final 10 minutes when Newcastle Benfield were reduced to 10 men. The momentum shifted and Darlington pushed forward with purpose.
As the match moved into injury time, a long kick from Flood found Ayden Mahachi, who showed composure to finish from close range and level the score.
With seconds remaining, the crowd erupted. Hayden Laing broke clear and finished expertly to complete a dramatic turnaround, end Newcastle Benfield’s unbeaten run, and secure a memorable win for Darlington.
