Darlington Under 19s welcomed unbeaten Newcastle Benfield to Eastbourne, knowing they would need a top performance against one of the sides tipped for the title.
The hosts made a poor start and fell behind after 90 seconds. A sharp Newcastle Benfield striker reacted quickest to finish from close range.
Darlington responded well. The tempo lifted and the atmosphere followed. The hosts began to contain their visitors but relied heavily on an outstanding display from goalkeeper Dom Flood, who made a series of key saves to keep the score at 1–0.
The game turned in the final 10 minutes when Newcastle Benfield were reduced to 10 men. The momentum shifted and Darlington pushed forward with purpose.
As the match moved into injury time, a long kick from Flood found Ayden Mahachi, who showed composure to finish from close range and level the score.
