Midfielder leaves the club because of work commitments

Quakers have today agreed to cancel the contract of midfielder Matty Cornish by mutual consent.

Matty, who runs a very successful green energy business, has asked to be released from his contract in order to concentrate more time on his work, and the club has reluctantly agreed.

Matty, who joined us in January 2024 after leaving Marske United, has made 77 appearances for us, scoring 14 times.

He made a big contribution to our Great Escape in season 2023-24 after Steve and Terry arrived,  scoring six times including the goal of the season with a tremendous goal from long range against Blyth Spartans. His goal took 69 per cent of the vote.

He also scored a memorable winner in the last minute at Kidderminster the following season.

In a message to fans, Matty says; “Unfortunately, the time has come when I can no longer commit to the time it takes to play at this level and the effort that Darlington FC deserve. Business and work are taking up the majority of my time and I wouldn’t be doing the club, fans, management or myself justice by carrying on this way.

“I would like to thank everyone involved with Darlo for how good they’ve been with me throughout my time here. Massive thank you to the Gaffer, Terry and all of the staff, I wish them all the very best in taking the club to the next level. Most of all thank you to the fans who have been amazing with me throughout and they have given me some moments I will never forget.

“All the best!”

Manager Steve Watson said; “Matty has been a big part of what we’ve done since we came into the club. He’s scored some really important goals and made some really important contributions along the way.

“This has probably been a frustrating season for him. He’s been in and out of the squad through injury, and his own working position has made it difficult for him to juggle work and football.

“Obviously he’s made the decision that something has to give. We wish him all the best. He’s been  fantastic for us, he’s been a great character with great ability and great sense of humour – overall a great kid.”

Matty leaves with our very best wishes and thanks for all the help he has given us in various ways, and we wish him all the best for the future.
