Darlington striker Amar Purewal has been called up for the Panjab national team for a friendly match later in the month – and if successful he could go on to play in an international tournament.

Amar, who is just about recovered from a cruciate injury that has kept him out of action for over a year, has been called up to play for the Panjab on Saturday 20th February against the Leicester International Academy, at Leicester City’s training ground.

Panjab FA achieved membership with ConiFA (Confederation of Independent Football Associations) a growing global football body in September 2014. ConIFA are the global football body outside of FIFA permitting membership to states, regions and isolated territories. ConIFA are rapidly growing, in the last two years, 34 football associations including Panjab FA, have become members to promote culture, heritage and identity and enjoy the freedom to play football on an international platform.

The Panjab, which is a district in north west India, are building up to the ConiFA world championships in May this year, which will feature Kurdistan, North Italy (Pandania), East Switzerland and other team representatives from Europe, Asia and Africa. Teams are calling up players playing in the Serie A and B also the Russian Premier League, so the quality and challenge will be high.

Darlington manager Martin Gray said; “It is a great honour for Amar, we will support him as much as possible. Not many players at this level get the chance to play on an international stage.”
