Darlington FC and the Green Howards

Appeal for memorabilia
The Green Howards Museum are creating a temporary exhibition on Football and the Green Howards for 2026 and are looking to involve clubs which members of the Regiment have played for. The exhibition will include the Victoria Cross of Donald Bell VC who was the first professional footballer to enlist in the First World War.
Darlington FC was one of several local teams that some members of the Green Howards played for around the First and Second World Wars and they are including their story in the displays.
They are hoping that Darlington supporters may have some memorabilia from this period that they could use in their display to tell the story of both the Club and the Regiment. Things like match shirts or boots would be perfect but they’d be happy to talk through any items that might fit in.
They would also love to hear stories of any member of the Club who served with the Green Howards in particular – for example, they have artefacts related to Douglas Monument who signed a contract to play for Darlington just a week or so before the start of the Second World War. He immediately enlisted and never returned to the club to take up his contract - https://greenhowards.org.uk/falling-foul-of-the-war/.
