Here, Tony from Altrincham talks about his experience with prostate cancer

Tony is savouring the beautiful game

"It’s fantastic that Prostate Cancer UK are again partnering with Non-League Day. This year will mark 11 years of working together and I’m delighted that my club Altrincham FC will helping change the game for those affected by prostate cancer - common cancer in men.

“I’ve been involved with the charity for many years now, and it's been a great source of support for me since my diagnosis back in May 2017. Back then the disease was scarcely on my radar, but it is now.

“Hearing about my prostate cancer diagnosis was a shattering experience. It changed my life. You immediately ask so many questions, like will I be able to walk my daughter down the aisle on her wedding day, or see my grandson grow up? The following days and months were horrendous, with so many dark moments. I was terrified of what the future held.

“Working with the charity, and with the support of friends, loved ones and the local community, including Altrincham FC, was so important as I started to adapt to my life-changing news. I’ve enjoyed so many amazing moments over the past eight years, and I carry with me a renewed purpose to make a difference for men, like me, and their families.

“Football can be an amazing vehicle to beat the drum about so many issues, and in my case, to raise awareness about and funds for Prostate Cancer UK. From matchday collections, managers wearing badges, and supporters walking to games and this year a limited edition football shirt giveaway fans can get involved with, it really is the beautiful game.

"I’m proud to be an Altrincham fan. The club has supported me throughout my prostate cancer journey and so proud they are supporting a cause I’m passionate about, and I can’t wait for Non-League Day. See you there!”
