Darlington finished their pre-season with a home defeat by Gateshead in their friendly.

They played some very good football to go 2-1 up with eleven minutes remaining, but Alun Armstrong's side scored twice to secure victory

Quakers fell behind after just three minutes, when Dom Telford worked his way in from the right , and scored with a left foot shot that just squeezed past the right hand post.

Quakers hit back, and Cedric Main and Tom Allan were both denied, before former Gateshead player Allan levelled on 22 minutes, when he picked the ball up on the left, ran inside, and placed a low shot past the outstretched keeper's hands into the bottom right corner.

They nearly got a second, but Will Hatfield's low shot was saved, and Allan was narrowly wide from a driven low cross by Cedric Main.

Quakers went ahead on 39 minutes when Scott Barrow's free kick was headed into the six yard box by Jack Maskell, and Main stabbed the ball home from a couple of yards.

In the second half, Gateshead came more into the game, but there was nearly a third on the hour when Maskell nodded down a left wing cross for Will Hatfield to first time volley just over the bar.

And the midfielder was just off target again when Main caused confusion in the Gateshead defence, and Aidan Rutledge set him to fire narrowly over again.

But Gateshead levelled on 79 minutes when Callum Bone scored at the second attempt from a right wing cross., and then in the last minute, Kain Adom sneaked through and scored the winner
