Darlington Under 11s go through in National League Cup

Boys and girls on the road to Wembley

Two local schools representing Darlington FC at the National League Under 11s Cup have both progressed through to the North Finals after a day at Soccer Sensations in Stockton organised by Hartlepool FC Community Trust.

The girls' team from St Augustine's not only qualified for the North Finals but won the whole competition beating Gateshead FC on penalties after a thrilling 5-5 draw in the final. The girls team started with a resounding win against Hartlepool before throwing away leads against both Blyth for a draw and Gateshead for a defeat before beating Spennymoor comfortably. The squad were holding their breath and praying for a Gateshead win versus Blyth in the final game. This happened with lots of cheering from Mr Raper meaning the final was Gateshead v Darlington. Darlington were in control throughout maintaining a good lead and going into the final minute winning by 5 goals to 3 but once again a lead was lost meaning the fantastic victory was assured in a penalty shootout.

The boys (mixed) team were from Mowden and qualified after finishing second to a strong Blyth Spartans team. The boys started their day with a narrow defeat to Blyth in the group games before beating Gateshead, Spennymoor and Hartlepool to set up a rematch with Blyth. Despite playing really well the boys fell just short and were beaten 3-1.

Both teams now progress to the North Finals held in Staveley on March 21st with the winners of this tournament going to Wembley! Could Darlo be at Wembley this season? Let's hope so!
