Mid-Season Update: CEO David Johnston on Darlington FC’s Progress and Ambitions
As Christmas approaches and we hit the halfway point of the season, Darlington FC CEO David Johnston sat down to share his thoughts on how things are shaping up. With the team unbeaten in their last six league matches and sitting just four points off the play-off spots, there’s a growing sense of optimism around the club.
On the Pitch: Building Momentum
Having played 22 games so far, DJ reflected on the challenges the team has overcome, including early-season injuries and a reliance on younger players. “We’ve got great shape, and defensively, we’re strong,” he said, crediting Steve Watson and Terry Mitchell for their tactical approach. The squad has adapted well, even with personnel changes, but DJ emphasised the need to find more goals to push higher up the table.
“If we can get a forward scoring 15 goals between now and the end of the season, we’ll be in the play-offs,” he added, hinting at the importance of consistent goal-scoring as the campaign progresses.
January Window Plans
With the January looming, DJ hinted that reinforcements could be on the way. Discussions are planned with the management team, the supporters’ group, and the board to explore options. While the current budget is fully spent, he expressed a determination to find ways to strengthen the squad.
“We’re so close, and if we can add that extra quality, we’ll have a real shot at those play-off spots,” he said.
New Ground Talks
Off the pitch, speculation continues about a possible new ground. While DJ acknowledged the complexity of the situation, he assured fans that progress is being made. “We’re in detailed negotiations with stakeholders, and while I can’t make any promises, we’re moving forward,” he said. Transparency remains a priority, though the club will only share updates if and when agreements are finalised.
Festive Fixtures and Looking Ahead
The festive period brings two key games against Scarborough Athletic on Boxing Day and South Shields on New Year’s Day. He sees these fixtures as a chance to build momentum, urging fans to get behind the team during this crucial stretch.
A Message to Fans
He closed the interview with a heartfelt message to supporters, thanking them for their continued backing and wishing them a Merry Christmas. “Let’s push on and see where we get to. I’m very positive about the rest of the season,” he said, encouraging fans to connect with him at upcoming matches.
With a resilient squad, ambitious plans, and passionate supporters, the second half of the season promises to be an exciting journey for everyone at Darlington FC. Catch the full interview with him on our YouTube channel for more insights.
