DJ: We want to continue our progression

Review of the season just finished and looking ahead

Darlington FC CEO David Johnston has reflected on the club’s progress in the 2024/25 season and shared his ambitions for the campaign ahead, as the Boost The Budget fundraiser passes the £50,000 mark.

In an in-depth conversation with Media Manager and Secretary Ray Simpson, DJ praised the work of the management team, highlighted the club’s long-term aspirations, spoke about the situation of a possible new ground, and paid tribute to the loyalty and support of Quakers fans at home and away.

Season Review: Progress on the Pitch

Looking back at the season just gone, DJ acknowledged the club’s improvement – climbing to 11th place with 69 points, up from 16th and 56 points the previous year.

“It’s the highest points total we’ve had since I’ve been at the club. We didn’t quite reach the play-offs, but the progress under Steve and Terry has been clear.”

The club made good use of the loan market, bringing in players from Doncaster, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Carlisle who contributed strongly to the campaign. DJ credited the management team’s contacts and coaching environment for developing those players during their time at Blackwell Meadows.

Squad Planning and Retention

With preparations now turning to the 2025/26 season, DJ confirmed that work is well underway on the retained list, with most of the current squad expected to remain in place. Recruitment is already active, with around 40 potential targets being assessed.

“We’ve got a good core of National League North players. The aim now is to add some extra quality and depth.”

The Challenge of a Competitive Division

The CEO also addressed the growing financial challenge of competing in a league where more clubs are operating on full-time models.

“It’s a really tough division, arguably harder than the National League itself. We’d love to go full-time — but that depends on our ability to grow commercially and secure the infrastructure to support it, which includes a new ground.”

Pitch Investment and Blackwell Meadows

DJ responded to concerns raised about the pitch late in the season, confirming that new equipment has been jointly purchased with the rugby club to dramatically improve irrigation.

“It will now take four hours to water the pitch rather than two days. That’s a big step forward and should lead to better playing conditions next season.”

New Stadium Update

While unable to provide full details, DJ confirmed that plans for a new ground are at an advanced stage, with one preferred option in play — but bound by confidentiality agreements.

“We’re close. But there are other parties involved, and other options too. When there’s something official to say, it will come directly from me.”

He added that Darlington Borough Council and other local sports clubs have been supportive throughout the process plus he praised DRFC Chairman Andy Gunnell.

Supporter Praise and Boost The Budget

With an average crowd of 1,436 at Blackwell Meadows this season and strong turnouts away from home, DJ was full of praise for the club’s fans.

“Our supporters are outstanding. Not once this season did they turn on the team — they’ve backed us every step of the way.”

The Boost The Budget campaign — which helps fund the playing squad — has already passed the £50,000 mark, with a £180,000 target set for the summer.

“Since 2017, supporters have raised over £1 million. That’s an incredible effort, and it makes a real difference to what Steve and Terry can do with the squad.”

Looking Ahead

DJ confirmed that the hard work has already begun behind the scenes, with scouting, recruitment and planning in full swing ahead of August.

“We want to build on the progress we’ve made. It’s a competitive league, but we’ll work hard to put a strong squad together and give our fans something to get behind.”
