Darlington defender Gary Brown says that Quakers’ 1-0 win at Blyth on Monday was one of his most memorable.

Brown, who was with Blyth when they reached the third round of the FA Cup in 2009, thoroughly enjoyed his return to Croft Park.

“I thought it was a great performance, one of the best I’ve been involved in,” he said.

“The whole occasion felt like a home game, similar to the play off game against Spennymoor last season.

“There were two good sets of fans inside the ground, both teams gave everything, neither team totally outplayed the other, but we took the chance that came along.

“I thought we had more control of the game than Blyth, and when one team had control, we were more consistent with that control than Blyth.”

Gary said that a training session the day before the game was brilliant.

"Martin's training sessions are superb, we worked on a few things ahead of the game, both defensively and offensively.

“We have such an honest bunch of lads at the club and the camaraderie amongst the lads is brilliant. Everybody is in it together, and heading in the same direction.

“The Blyth victory was a real team effort, players and management. Everybody buys into what we’re doing.”

The outing at his old club was only Gary’s second league game since he returned to the club last month. “I’ve only played with Lee Gaskell twice in the league, and in both games he’s scored great goals. On Monday, I thought he was going to be pushed towards the corner flag, so I shouted at Thommo to move forward, so then Lee could play the ball inside to him.

“I didn’t expect him to get away from his marker, and hit a fantastic shot into the top corner. His goal was just as good as the one he scored from 30 odd yards at Hyde.

“The win has given everybody a boost for the rest of the season. Now we need to keep it going against Ilkeston on Saturday.”
