Gavin Ellis and the season when time stood still -- part 7
By Ray Simpson
More from the Darlo poet
Here's some more prose from Gavin, looking back to our games against Boston, Tamworth and Kidderminster
PILGRIMS PROGRESS
Boston come to visit next after three wins on our travels
Let’s hope today we can make it four as the game unravels
It doesn’t take The Quakers long to take an early lead
Tyrone dances through the Boston team, one-nil just what we need
Adam Campbell makes it two, Boston are in shock
They find themselves two-nil down, ten minutes on the clock
Our hopes of reaching half time without conceding any goals
Are dashed when Boston pull one back through prolific Dominic Knowles
The second half gets underway and Boston come on strong
We worry that a leveller will quickly come along
In the closing stages they hit their own man on the line
We’re glad we’ve secured a two-one win then the ref blows for full time.
LAMBS TO THE SLAUGHTER
Cup fever hits the town again as we travel to The Lamb
The home of Tamworth Football Club just North of Birmingham
The town’s best known for Snowdome where people indoor ski
We’re here today with Darlo trying for cup win number three
The ref gets the cup tie underway on Tamworth’s pitch of plastic
Tyrone gives us an early lead with legs of sheer elastic
We then concede a penalty at the away end of the ground
Connell pulls off a super save then beats out the rebound
Before half time we’re two-nil up, Tyrone and Omar combine
And Holness has a thunderbolt that flies across the line
In the second half we make it three, it’s Tyrone at the double
We’ve put Lambs to the slaughter and we’ve burst their’ team’s cup bubble
DOUBLE HEADER
Following torrential rain our game’s called off at Guiseley
With two home games on the trot we need to use them wisely
It’s Kidderminster Harriers, we aim for straight win number six
It’s almost Hallowe’en Night, hope we’re treat to some new tricks
The team in red from Worcestershire try to hold on till half time
Their full back gets caught in the face, free kick The Harriers whine
The Darlo players carry on and bring the game alive
When Rivers beats the keeper and his slow despairing dive
We’ve almost made it six straight wins the fans about to shout
When Connell makes a wonder save from a striker three yards out
We draw nil-nil the next game in, although Hereford have ten men
The team though now have self-belief, let’s do the same again
