Getting Shirty 1998-99

A look at home shirts in the 90s.
Craig Stoddart looks back at some of the home shirts that we wore during the 90s. Today, it's the 1998-99 home shirt.
As had become the trend since 95-96, this was another one-season only kit, but 1998-99 was an eventful campaign that saw these colours worn on some high profile occasions.
It was the season that we went top of the table after six games, it was also the year Darlington beat Burnley 3-2 despite being 2-0 down with ten minutes to go, when we played Manchester City live on Sky plus there was the 3-2 win at Hartlepool United.
This kit, manufactured by Biemma, an Italian company that didn’t seem to know what design to choose so they went for about five in one go, was used in each of those games, as well as the infamous Brentford game when the players learned en route that they wouldn’t be paid that month. A 3-0 defeat put paid to being top of the table.
Worn with black shorts and socks, except against Man. City when Tommo the kitman opted for white. It was the same against Burnley and at Hartlepool. David Hodgson must have had a thing about wearing all-white in big games.
Marco Gabbiadini made his debut in this on the first day of the season against Barnet.
