Good win for women's team at Boldon
By Ray Simpson
Winning start to the season continues
Darlington Women continued their winning start to the season with a 4-2 away win at Boldon CA on Sunday.
The victory makes it three wins from three league matches, plus another win in the Women's FA Cup. Goals from Hattie Raine, Chloe Ryan, Lucy Hart and Aimee Dagnall gave Quakers the points.
Darlington started with a good tempo and were one up inside five minutes with a typical Hattie Raine finish to open the scoring. Boldon reacted well and caused some problems for the Darlington defence. But the Quaker Women kept creating chances and probably could have been a few goals up early on. Boldon got the equaliser with some sloppy defending and the forward finished well.
The Quakers reacted instantly and went up the other end and got back in front. A lovely finish from Chloe Ryan, with around 50 seconds between the equaliser and Ryan bulging the net for 2-1. It wasn’t too long after that, Darlington added a third and what a goal it was. Lucy Hart with a brilliant solo effort, getting in on the left, dancing through a few defenders before smashing it past the keeper for her first goal for the club. What a way to score it.
It was 3-1 at half time and Darlington knew they needed another one to kill the game off in the second half. Aimee Dagnall hadn’t scored yet, so on the 50th minute mark, she extended the lead, another long range effort and getting on the score sheet for the fourth game running! Plenty of changes were made and the fresh legs saw the game out well for Darlington. Boldon got a consolation goal in the 81st minute and did have spells to get back in the game but Evie Whitaker kept any half chances out and Darlington took home the three points.
Player of the match was awarded to Toni Upton in the middle of the park (sponsored by Dawn Fire Safety) for a battling performance in midfield, breaking up play and winning many second balls.
Manager Shaun Mackenzie said: "We were not at our best today but the main thing is we got the three points. The wind didn’t help the game, but we still played some decent football in spells and scored some great goals. But I still feel we need to be more clinical and take our chances. We should have scored more and the game should have been out of sight.
"I am still pleased with the performance and sometimes you have to dig in away from home and grind out a result. Fair play to Boldon who kept going and stayed in the game, causing us a few problems. Still things to work on in training and we will look forward to next week's big test in the FA Cup Second Round Qualifying against Sunderland West End.
"We hope to have as many fans there as possible to cheer us on, 2pm kick off at Eastbourne Sports Complex."
