Happy 200th anniversary to the S and D Railway!

Commemoration of the birth of the railways

Today marks the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, when Locomotion No.1 became the first steam locomotive to pull a passenger train on a public railway, bringing global recognition to Darlington.

The S&DR's inaugural journey, which started in Shildon before going on to Darlington and Stockton, on 27th September 1825 changed global social behaviour, trade, travel, and communication.

Today, we're celebrating this important milestone and event in our town’s history, with local groups S and DR 200, Hopetown Darlington, The Friends of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, and rail enthusiasts worldwide.
There are celebrations going on all weekend -- details are available here:

And coming soon, we have something special lined up to mark this year’s special anniversary…
