Exclusive interview with Assistant Manager by Stuart Armstrong
Assistant manager, Terry Mitchell, took some time to reflect on the club's dramatic end to last season and shared his thoughts on the ongoing preparations for the upcoming season in an interview on our YouTube channel with Stuart Armstrong.
Reflecting on the Great Escape
Mitchell expressed immense pride in the team's effort to avoid relegation last season, describing the achievement as comparable to winning a promotion. He emphasised the collective effort of the players, staff, and fans in overcoming a challenging situation.
"Last year was an unbelievable experience. To claw our way from where we were to where we achieved, confirming safety at home was a great emotion," Mitchell said whilst noting that that the goal next season is to celebrate higher achievements.
Working with Steve Watson
Mitchell provided insights into his working relationship with manager Steve Watson, highlighting the complementary roles they play. For example in the closing weeks of the season in training whilst Watson focused on the defensive aspects, Mitchell handled the attacking training work.
"Steve is the boss, and I back him 100%. We discuss everything from training to team selection, and while I'll challenge if I think something isn't right, ultimately, Steve has the final say," Mitchell explained.
Player Movements and Recruitment
Looking ahead to the new season, Mitchell discussed recent player movements, including the departure of forward Asante and the arrival of Joe Leesley. He praised Leesley's versatility and leadership qualities, emphasising the importance of having players who can contribute in multiple positions.
"Joe is a fantastic addition. He's proven, experienced, and versatile. He'll lead by example both on and off the pitch," Mitchell said.
He also hinted at ongoing conversations with potential new signings, aiming to add key quality players to the squad. The goal is to build a team capable of challenging for higher positions in the league, with a focus on securing players who can make an immediate impact.
Boost The Budget Campaign
Mitchell expressed deep gratitude for the fans' incredible support through the Boost The Budget campaign, which has raised significant funds to strengthen the squad. He acknowledged the critical role that these contributions have played in the club's recent successes and future ambitions.
"Without the Boost The Budget, we wouldn't have been able to bring in the key players who helped us stay in the league. The fans have a massive part in our success," Mitchell stated.
As the club continues its preparations for the new season, Mitchell urged fans to keep supporting the campaign, highlighting its importance in bringing top-quality players to the Quakers.
Looking Forward
Mitchell is optimistic about the future, aiming for a more positive and competitive season. He reiterated the commitment to making prudent use of the funds raised, ensuring every penny is spent wisely to bring the best possible talent to the club.
"We appreciate every penny the fans contribute. It helps us build a team that can challenge more at the top end of the league," Mitchell concluded.
