Young Darlington fans are pictured in the Tin Shed in jubilant mood before the League Cup tie with Leeds United in September 1996.
Having drawn the first leg 2-2 at Elland Road a week earlier, when Darren Roberts and Robbie Painter scored for Quakers, the second meeting saw George Graham’s Premiership club avoid embarrassment by winning 2-0.
Leeds’ scorers were Rodney Wallace and Ian Harte, while also in their team were Nigel Martyn, Lee Sharpe and Carlton Palmer, as well as midfielder Mark Ford who went on to join Darlington in 2001.
Played in front of a season’s high crowd of 6,298, the teams were:
Darlington: Newell, Brumwell, Barnard, Twynham (Painter), Crosby, Gregan, Oliver (Kelly), Atkinson, Roberts, Blake, Carss.
Leeds: Martyn, Kelly, Jobson, Wetherall, Harte, Couzens, Ford, Palmer, Sharpe, Gray, Wallace.
