Darlington midfielder Roger Wicks goes for goal during a match at Feethams against Rochdale in August 1982 (writes Craig Stoddart)

The defender attempting to hold him off is Eric Snookes, while in support is Quakers’ Tony McFadden.

Darlington won 3-0, Alan Walsh (2) and Barry Dunn scoring on the first day of a season that would see the team finish 17th during what was Billy Elliott’s last campaign as manager.

Having joined from Netherfield in 1980-81, Wicks had made his debut off the bench at home to Mansfield Town and made ten appearances before the end of the season, scoring once in a 3-3 draw at Bournemouth.

Although not always a first-team regular, Wicks was with the club for three seasons, and on his release in 1983 joined Newcastle Blue Star.

Darlington: Cuff, Brissett, Smith, Kamara, Wilson, Gilbert, Wicks, McLean, Dunn, Walsh, McFadden.
