By Ray Simpson

Responsible for under 23s, academy and women's teams
Darlington Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Dan Summerfield as Head of Player and Coach Development for the U23s, Academy, and Women’s Team. This role expands on Dan’s existing position within our youth set-up, where he currently oversees teams from U7 to U18.
John Vickerman, Director at Darlington FC, said: “I’m delighted to secure Dan for this important role. His appointment will help manage and align the development pathways across both our senior men’s and women’s teams, allowing for stronger coordination and progression from the youth set-up through to the Academy, U23s, and eventually the first teams. Working closely with team managers, Dan will ensure greater cohesion and formal links to the first teams, creating a genuine pathway for all youth players, both boys and girls. Dan has already added great value to the club, and now is the right time to take this next step.”
A key part of this role will be to help foster an environment where young players can thrive, not just in performance, but in enjoyment and connection. While Darlington FC continues to pursue high standards on the pitch, we remain rooted in our community. The focus through our youth system is on providing a fun, engaging experience that helps children fall in love with the game, make lasting friendships, and grow as people. And for those players who want to push further, the structure is in place to support them every step of the way.
“We’re here to support every player on their individual journey,” said Dan. “Whether they’re playing for the love of the game or aiming for the highest levels, we’re committed to providing the best development environment possible. From VEO match analysis to classroom-based learning and full performance data through our Eyeball system, our players have access to the same tools used in elite academies. It’s about giving them the knowledge, support, and structure to thrive, both on and off the pitch.”
Dan’s position will also serve as a support and coordination point for coaches across all teams. “We’ve got some fantastic coaches at this club,” Dan said. “This role isn’t about telling anyone how to coach, it’s about making sure we’re aligned, sharing ideas, and working as a team. Coaching is a journey for all of us.”
Dan is also passionate about coach development and progression. “I’m working on my own UEFA C licence, I know what it takes, and I want to help other coaches through it too,” he added. “We want to be a club where upskilling is part of the culture. If you’re progressing through your badges, brilliant. That’s what we want. We want to be a club where players and coaches are all developing together, pushing each other forward in a positive environment.”
Dan brings a wealth of experience in youth football development and has also built strong business and career development partnerships both within and beyond the game.
Speaking on his new role, Dan added: “Just under two years ago, I joined Darlington FC Youth as Development Lead. Alongside a talented committee, we’ve implemented impactful partnerships that have significantly advanced our youth section. Since joining, our youth teams have grown by around 40%, with 90% competing in the top divisions in the North East. Every year, we have players signing with academies at Newcastle, Sunderland, and Middlesbrough, and those who stay with us perform strongly in friendlies against these same sides.
“This new role is a natural extension of my youth work, supporting clear pathways through our Academy, U23s, and Women’s Team. The board has been fantastic to work with. Terry and I regularly discuss players within the system, and Shaun has been instrumental in supporting the youth setup, especially with the creation of the new U18 girls' team.
“All the Darlington FC teams share the same ambitious goals, and I’m excited to play my part in the years ahead.”
Everyone at Darlington FC would like to wish Dan a warm welcome in this new and exciting role.
