Three scored in one-sided second half -- best ever league win over Moors

Spennymoor 0 Darlington 4

Howells 33 mins 0-1, Main 55 mins, 0-2, 60 mins 0-3, Maskell 84 mins, 0-4

Darlington bounced back from the defeat at Hereford with an excellent victory at the Brewery Field.

Once Max Howells gave Quakers the lead with a powerful strike, they took control of the game and Cedric Main scored twice in the second half, one from the penalty spot, with Jack Maskell also on target.

It was Quakers' highest ever win over Moors in the league, and their eighth win on the road this season.

Quakers won a free kick on the left on 5 minutes which Ellis Stanton curled towards the far post, but Brad James came off his line and held on to the ball.

Moors had their first attack when Heaney got to the bye line, but Tom Platt intercepted at the near post.

Ellis Stanton sent Cedric Main through to score on 9 minutes, but the flag went up for offside.

When Moors were awarded a free kick and the ball was chipped in by Heaney, Watson confidently came well off his line to hold on to the ball.

Moors won the first corner on 13 minutes, but Toby Lees headed the inswinger away.

Quakers won a free kick on the right for a foul on Main. McGowan floated the free kick into the middle where Main headed over from six yards.

Moors missed a good chance on 18 minutes when the ball was played through for McKeown who ran into the box and with Watson advancing, could only find the side netting.

Quakers had a half chance when Stanton found Tom Tweedy on the left, and he pulled the ball back for Main to have a shot blocked by a defender.

Then Maskell picked the ball up on the right side of the box and tried to chip James, who touched the ball over the bar.

The visitors had a good chance on 30 minutes when Maskell headed down a free kick to Stanton, who quickly played the ball back to Maskell, who curled a right foot shot just over the bar from the edge of the area.

Quakers nearly scored on 32 minutes when Tweedy cleverly beat his man on the left, got into the box and hit a left foot shot that Maskell deflected on to the post.

But Quakers took the lead on 34 minutes. Stanton ran forward and played a great ball with the outside of his right foot into the path of Howells, who beat a tackle, and then fired a right foot shot past James for his fifth goal of the season.

Moors had a great chance just on half time when a corner fell to Tom Broadbent, whose effort was going towards the top corner until Watson just managed to touch the ball over the top -- a superb save which would prove to be a turning point.

Just on half time, Forbes nodded a corner down to Tweedy, on the turn, to put wide.

Half time: Spennymoor 0 Darlington 1

Quakers won the first corner of the second half, but James held on to Stanton’s inswinger on his line, then the Moors defence cleared a long throw by Scott Barrow.

Main won another corner on 52 minutes and that led to a penalty.

The ball was curled in by McGowan from the corner and with several bodies in the six yard box, the referee ruled that a defender handled and awarded a spot kick , which Main tucked away for his 12th goal of the season. Toby Lees also seemed to be pulled down as he went for the corner as well, so the referee possibly had two reasons to give the penalty.

And the score was 3-0 on 60 minutes, McGowan crossed delicately from the right for Main to glance a header off the post past the stranded James!

Quakers took control after that, not taking any risks.

They made two subs on 79 minutes, Ben Hedley coming on for Scott Barrow, then Tom Allan came on for Will McGowan.

They scored a fourth on 83 minutes when Stanton’s ball forward wasn’t cleared by the Spennymoor defence, and Jack Maskell scored with a low shot into the bottom left corner for his 10th of the season

And in stoppage time, Howells cut in from the left and curled a right foot shot just wide, and Stanton forced James to his knees with a left foot shot.

The final whistle completed a one-sided second half in Quakers' favour, which was greeted loudly by over 600 travelling Darlington fans.
