A Decade of Dedication Behind the Mic

Everyone at Darlington FC would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Michael Cansfield, who is stepping back from regular away commentary duties after ten outstanding seasons with Darlo Fans Radio.

Michael has been a constant presence on the road, covering 99% of away matches over the past decade. Travelling at his own expense and often working solo, he’s brought the excitement of away days to thousands of fans unable to be there in person.

His commitment has taken him to all corners of the country – from Tuesday nights at Chorley to Saturday afternoons perched high on scaffolding at Rushall, or squeezed into corners at Warrington. Rain or shine, win or lose, even during Covid, Michael was there – microphone in hand, generator humming, and fans tuned in from all around the world.

"There won’t be many Darlo fans who’ve clocked up the number of miles he has — especially when they’re going to be working when they get there."

Michael Price

"Michael, you've popped up in some amazing places, travelled a huge amount of miles, and everybody is grateful for what you’ve done."

Ray Simpson

A true one-man broadcast unit, Michael has handled everything from commentary to kit – often with no desk, no badge, and no backup.

"He’s a one-man fire hazard with all the electrical equipment he’s got. But seriously, what a unique and brilliant commentator he’s been."

Stuart Armstrong

It’s a role that requires skill, stamina and no shortage of creativity. As Andrew Matthews fondly recalled:

"We ended up doing a remote radio broadcast walking around the pitch at Leamington. I was carrying batteries and boxes while Michael called the game. We were on the touchline when Thommo scored a hat-trick winner – fans all around us erupted, and that moment was broadcast straight into living rooms. Magic."

Andrew Matthews

Michael hasn’t just covered matches – he’s become part of the matchday experience itself. His familiar voice has been the soundtrack to dramatic wins, last-minute equalisers, and unforgettable away days.

"We always remember the Walsall game. Fantastic day – I danced around the living room when I heard his commentary."

Steve Carter

"For most Darlo fans, when they think of Darlo Fans Radio, they don’t think of us at Blackwell Meadows – they think of Michael Cansfield."

Stuart Armstrong

To commemorate Michael's contribution, we've gathered tributes from across the club – staff, fans and fellow broadcasters. You can watch the full video here:

Michael, your dedication, professionalism and passion have left a lasting legacy at this football club. We wish you all the very best and hope to still see (and hear) you at the odd game in seasons to come.

From everyone at Darlington FC – thank you, Mike.
