Under 23s beaten at home

Defeated by Deerness Valley
Darlington Under 23s 1 Deerness Valley 3
Our under 23s went down 3-1 in their latest home game in the Wearside League First Division, but they will look back on missed opportunities.
Both teams approached the game with intent, and the opening stages were marked by high energy, strong challenges, and some encouraging attacking moments from the hosts.
Deerness Valley broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark, capitalising on a spell of pressure to edge in front. The goal didn’t rattle Darlington, who continued to grow into the game and looked increasingly confident moving the ball forward. Their persistence paid off shortly before the break when Jesse Nelson produced a composed finish in the 41st minute to draw the sides level. It was a goal that reflected Darlington’s desire and willingness to stay in the fight.
However, just as momentum appeared to be shifting, Darlington were hit with a setback. Deerness Valley restored their lead on the stroke of half-time, making it 2–1 in what proved to be a crucial moment in the match.
The second half followed a familiar pattern: Darlington worked hard, battled for every second ball, and created moments of danger in the final third, but that clinical edge was missing. Deerness Valley, meanwhile, took advantage of their chances, adding a third goal midway through the half to give themselves some breathing room.
Despite trailing, Darlington continued to compete and pushed for a way back into the game, showing character and commitment across the pitch.
There were positive individual performances despite the defeat. Steve Dawson was awarded Man of the Match for his effort, discipline, and tireless contribution throughout the afternoon.
Manager Grant Cuthbertson said; “While the result wasn’t what the team wanted, the performance showed plenty of heart, and with improved decision-making in front of goal, the group will feel there were foundations built for future matches.”
