Narrow defeat
A spirited performance from Darlington FC U23s saw them push the league leaders all the way on Saturday, despite ultimately falling to a 2–0 defeat against Belmont.
Darlington produced a solid first-half display, matching Belmont across the pitch and creating several promising chances. Both sides looked dangerous going forward, but it was Belmont who broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute, converting from a free kick to take a narrow lead into the break.
The second half began brightly for Darlington, who thought they had found a deserved equaliser early on. The ball was in the net, only for the referee to rule it out for a highly contentious offside decision.
Belmont doubled their advantage in the 61st minute, once again capitalising on a free kick to make it 2–0. Despite the setback, Darlington continued to press and looked determined to find a way back into the contest. However, Belmont’s defence remained resolute and saw out the remainder of the game.
Although the result didn’t go their way, it was an encouraging and competitive performance from the U23s against the league leaders. They remai sixth in the table.
Manager John Walters, who was in charge for the first time, said; "I was encouraged by what I saw.
"There was plenty of effort and organisation, particularly in the first half, and I felt the performance showed plenty of promise despite the result. The team’s work rate and commitment against the league leaders is a strong foundation to build on."
