Under 23s start new campaign with a victory

Good start at Coxhoe

Our under 23 team started their new Wearside League season with an excellent away win at Coxhoe Athletic.

After winning promotion last season from the Wearside League second division, they adjusted to life in the higher step straight away.

They started on the front foot and deservedly took the lead with a rocket by Jack Mortimer, who scored for the first team in midweek, from the edge of the box.

Then they got a bit sloppy and conceded lots of possession to Coxhoe who deservedly equalised before half time.

A change of system and Quakers dominated the second half, going on to score two further goals by Reuben Scotter and Mortimer for a fantastic opening day win.

Assistant manager John Walters said; “The players really stuck to their task against a very competitive side who gave us plenty to think about. We never gave up, and a change in our system meant that we dominated the second half and that perseverance was rewarded with the win.

“It was a great committed performance by the fourteen lads today to start the season with three points.”

Their next game is at home to Ferryhill Athletic on Saturday at Eastbourne.
