Skipper Will fires Quakers into next round

Place in last 16

FA Buildbase Trophy fourth round

Weymouth 0 Darlington 1

Scorer: Hatfield 45 mins, 0-1

A first half goal by skipper Will Hatfield deservedly put Quakers into the last 16 of the Buildbase FA trophy.

Quakers produced the perfect response to their last two away defeats with a very good all round team performance, especially when Weymouth were pushing for an equaliser towards the end.

And it was the skipper who fired hard-working Quakers into the next round with a typical goal just before half time.

The draw for the fifth round is on Monday at 1pm.

Confident Quakers, facing a team that had lost 8 times at home in the league this season, forced an early corner, and when the ball came into the box, Alex Storey couldn’t quite set up Maguire on the 6 yard line.

Erico Sousa made a good run up the left on 8 minutes, and his dangerous low cross to the far post was turned away for a corner by a defender .

Sousa popped up again on the left on 15 minutes, and curled a right footed cross into the middle where Maguire couldn’t quite get on the end of it.

Weymouth had their first attempt on 20 minutes with a 20 yarder by Jordan Ngalo that went well over the bar.

Quakers nearly scored on 22 minutes when the Weymouth defence didn’t clear a right wing cross by Tony McMahon and Sousa set up Maguire, whose shot was blocked.

Weymouth had a chance when McQuoid sent Shields up the left, and Shields’ right foot shot flashed across goal.

Quakers nearly scored on 28 minutes when Joe Wheatley’s free kick was headed up into the air by Nicky Hunt for Storey, on his return to the side, to head against the top of the crossbar.

And another chance came along when Sousa and Maguire cleverly set up Charman, who scooped his shot over the bar from ten yards.

Quakers took the lead just on half time when Will Hatfield picked the ball up 25 yards out, ran at the defence, and beat the keeper with a low right foot shot, his second goal of the season!!

Half time: Weymouth 0 Darlington 1

Quakers nearly went 2-0 up at the start of the second half. A poor pass by Mensah was seized up on by Rivers who ran into the box, but his shot was blocked by the outstretched foot of the keeper. The ball looped up in the air, and Maguire’s header was cleared off the line with Quakers claiming a goal.

Quakers controlled the game after that, but Weymouth had a half hearted penalty shout when sub Robinson went down in the area, and the referee waved play on.

Quakers had a chance on 69 minutes when Charman nodded down a Wheatley free kick for Maguire to set up Hatfield, whose left foot shot went just over the bar.

After that, Quakers soaked up the Weymouth pressure without much difficulty, with the back four giving nothing away. They had a minor scare when Mensah's header from a left wing cross lopped towards goal, but McMahon cleared.

In stoppage time, Adam Campbell got away down the left, cut inside and fired right footed just wide.
