Will: I couldn’t see myself playing anywhere else

Midfield talisman Will Hatfield has committed his future to Darlington by signing a new two-year contract with the club.
The 32-year-old, who has made 181 appearances over two spells and scored 27 goals for the Quakers, put pen to paper this week and spoke exclusively to the club about how pleased he is to continue his Darlington journey.
“It feels really good,” said Hatfield. “I knew I was out of contract at the end of the season, so I was hoping we could get everything sorted – and I’m delighted we have.”
“There were never any intentions of moving on. I always wanted to stay. I just hoped the club still wanted me – and once I knew they did, it was a no-brainer.”
“Heartbeat of the team”
Hatfield, who first joined the club in 2019 before a brief spell at AFC Fylde, returned to Blackwell Meadows in 2022 and has since become a fan favourite for his work rate, commitment and leadership on the pitch.
“I’ve been here many years now and it’s been unbelievable since I came back,” he said. “To still be part of this club means a lot. I’d love to reach 300 appearances – I’ve got that figure in my mind.”
The midfielder also praised the positive conversations he had with manager Steve Watson and assistant Terry Mitchell, describing the new contract as a statement of mutual commitment.
“It’s massive for me. I can’t see myself playing anywhere else. Having the club show that level of belief in me – giving me two years – really helps me stay focused on where I want to be.”
Eyes on the Play-Offs
Looking ahead to the new season, Hatfield echoed his manager’s ambition – and believes the current squad, bolstered by some smart additions, can make a strong push for the play-offs.
“We had a strong core last season and just fell short. A few more signings and a bit of luck with injuries, and there’s no reason we can’t be right in the mix.
“For a club like Darlington, with our size and fan base, that’s where we need to be.”
The Quakers begin pre-season training in early July ahead of the 2024/25 National League North campaign, and Hatfield says he can’t wait to pull on the black and white again.
“I’m really excited. I can’t wait to get going and see everyone again – let’s have a big season.”
