Quakers beaten by two free kicks after Thompson penalty

First ever league defeat by Spennymoor

Darlington 1 Spennymoor Town 2

Thompson 1-0 (18 mins, penalty), Taylor (53 mins, 1-1), Brogan (66 mins, 1-2)

Quakers were beaten by two second half free kicks in the local derby against Spennymoor.

Quakers played well in the first half and deserved to lead at half time courtesy of Stephen Thompson's 89th goal for the club, but they were pegged back by two free kicks in the second half.

But Quakers were unhappy about the award of the first, claiming that a foul wasn't committed.

There was a great show of support for Liam Hughes after 5 minutes when fans from both Darlington and Spennymoor held up banners “Itsokaytonotbeokay” and sang Liam's name.

There weren’t many openings in the game in the opening stages but Joe Wheatley played a good 1-2 with Stephen Thompson to get into the box, but a defender cleared.

Quakers had a corner on 11 minutes that dropped to Nicholson on the edge of the box, but his first touch let him down and Spennymoor cleared.

Thompson had the first shooting chance of the game on 13 minutes when he won possession and struck a low left foot shot just wide of the right hand post.

Moors replied with a cross from the left that Glen Taylor headed harmlessly over the bar.

Quakers were awarded a penalty on 16 minutes when Thompson picked up a ball in from Nicholson and was brought down by Curtis.

Thompson picked the ball up, and beat Gould with the ball going in off the post. Another goal by Thommo against Moors, and he’s now got 89 for Quakers!

Quakers went in search for a second, and Nicholson cut in from the right and hit a rising left foot shot that went over the bar.

Moors won a corner on 40 minutes when they got round the back of the defence, but Quakers cleared it without any problem.

Moors were given a free kick 30 yards out just before half time, but Brogan put it over the bar.

Moors levelled on 53 minutes. Elliott was penalised for a foul on Chandler, much to his protests 30 yards out. Brogan ruled the ball to Taylor, who hit a powerful right foot shot past Maddison into the net.

Moors had another chance when Brogan crossed from the left for Taylor to head downwards, but Maddison pushed the ball around the post.

Moors went in front on 66 minutes. Galbraith was penalised for a foul about 25 yards out, and Brogan curled the ball over the wall and into the top right hand corner.

Quakers nearly levelled on 76 minutes when a Galbraith free kick dropped for Will Smith, whose shot was deflected over the top.

Thompson then controlled a header  forward by Wheatley, turned and volleyed towards goal, but Gould saved.

Thompson then made a good run forward and struck a low shot that was deflected just wide of the post.

Quakers had a chance in stoppage time when Trotman got into the area and pulled the ball back for Thompson who had a shot blocked.
