π₯ Match Preview
The Quakers return for the first home pre-season game as they welcome Sunderland U21S to Blackwell Meadows.
Darlington started pre-season with a 2-1 win against Blyth Spartans, where goals from Matty Kirokiro and trialist Cyril Giraud capped off a good pre-season test for both teams.
Sunderland will be bringing their U21’s to Blackwell Meadows which will be a great test for Quakers as the U21’s play their football in the Premier League 2 where many of the future stars of football learn their craft.
Last season U21’s finished 13th in the Premier League 2, which got them into the playoffs, but they were knocked out in the Round of 16 by West Ham’s U21s.
The Black Cats are managed by former York City player and interim Rangers manager Graeme Murty.
They will be bringing a large squad of players for the game
π€ Player Spotlight
In recent years, The Quakers have had some successful loanees from Sunderland, including Matty Young, who was a pivotal part in The Great Escape, making his debut in a 4-0 away victory against South Shields. Last season, he was on loan at League 2 side Salford City, narrowly missing out on the playoffs. He played a half against Gateshead, keeping a clean sheet.
Another successful loan was Caden Kelly last season, who scored five goals for The Quakers, including a Boxing Day double against Scarborough Athletic. This season, he has joined fellow National League North side South Shields.
