Action from Darlington v Hartlepool in 1998

Two second half goals by strikers Darren Roberts and Marco Gabbiadini gave Darlington a 2-0 derby win over Hartlepool United at Feethams on 8th September 1998.

The result stretched Quakers’ unbeaten run to seven matches, and it left Pools to rue two missed chances by Craig Midgley in the first half.

The midweek match, which drew an attendance of 5,899, saw Quakers take the lead on the hour. A left-wing corner by Carl Shutt was headed back into the six-yard box by Richard Hope for Roberts to nod past Martin Hollund for his fourth goal of the season.

And it was 2-0 on 78 minutes. Brian Atkinson found Adam Reed with a pass to the right and he crossed perfectly for Gabbiadini to head past Hollund.

Darlington manager David Hodgson said: “I am absolutely delighted that we managed to keep a clean sheet again. But it took two good goals to beat them - I was especially delighted with the second one because it was a good footballing goal.”

Hartlepool manager Mick Tait said: “I hope the defeat hurts the players as much as it hurt the fans.”
