Poor first half costs Quakers

Second half much better but not enough

Telford United 3 Darlington 1

Barnett 14 mins, 1-0, Morgan-Smith 16 mins, 2-0, Udoh 45+1 mins, 3-0, Saunders 88 mins, 3-1

Quakers lost for the first time in four away games when they were beaten at the New Buck's Head.

Quakers were hit by two goals in three minutes, and just as they were looking ahead to the half time break, Telford scored a third.

The second half was much better, and Quakers' persistence was rewarded with a late goal.

Telford forced an early corner that was headed away at the near post, but so did Quakers at the other end following a good run by Luke Trotman. Eventually, after Stephen Thompson caused problems, the Telford defence got the ball away from the right wing corner.

Quakers were then given a free kick on the right for a foul on Luke Trotman, but keeper Josef Bursik came off his line to hold Terry Galbraith’s inswinger.

But Telford took the lead on 14 minutes. Daniel Udoh turned on the edge of the box and hit a powerful right foot shot that Turner blocked, but the ball came out for Ryan Barnett to sidefoot into the net past two defenders and the keeper.

And it was 2-0 on 16 minutes when Barnett got to the bye line on the right, and Amari Morgan-Smith headed his cross past Turner.

But Stephen Thompson nearly pulled a goal back on 24 minutes when he controlled the ball with his back to goal about 25 yards out, turned, and hit a right foot shot just over the crossbar.

Quakers had a half chance when Thompson again found space and chipped the ball left footed towards Saunders, but Bursik came off his line and denied the striker.

But they went 3-0 down in the first half stoppage time when Udoh picked up a loose ball, ran forward, and beat Turner with a low right foot shot into the bottom left hand corner.

Half time: Telford 3 Darlington 0

Quakers made a sub at half time, Jordan Nicholson coming on for Wilson Kneeshaw, and he injected some energy into the game.

Turner pulled off an excellent save on 62 minutes when Udoh slipped Darryl Knights through, but Turner got down well low to his left to parry his effort, and Udoh put the follow up into the side netting.

At the other end, Thompson had a shot charged down from ten yards for a corner that came to nothing.

Quakers made their second sub on 69 minutes when Mitch Glover came on for Wheatley.

Quakers nearly pulled one back on 70 minutes when Tom Elliott cut in from the left and struck a low shot that Bursik saved at his near post.

And they had another chance on 76 minutes when Thompson did well on the left to set up Saunders, whose first time left foot shot was well saved by Bursik.

Quakers pulled a goal back and gained some consolation on 88 minutes when Thompson drove a free kick through the defensive wall, the keeper couldn’t hold it, and Saunders followed up and tapped in.

And they nearly got a second when Thompson charged forward and struck a right foot shot that Bursik tipped over.
