Good 2-0 victory
FC Hartlepool 0 Darlington Under 23s 2
Darlington FC U23s delivered an outstanding all-round performance to secure a deserved 2–0 victory away at Hartlepool, combining defensive discipline with clinical counter-attacking football.
The opening period proved to be a tightly contested and physical encounter, with both sides struggling to find a breakthrough. Darlington’s rhythm was disrupted midway through the half following injuries to Sparke and Walters after a heavy challenge, though both players were able to avoid serious harm.
Despite the setbacks, the young Quakers remained composed. Goalkeeper Mason produced a pair of excellent saves to keep the scores level, while Barton and Man of the Match Harvey ensured the side retained its defensive structure and organisation. The visitors went into the interval on level terms, having shown resilience and maturity throughout the first half.
The second half saw Darlington take control, aided by impactful changes from the bench. The introduction of Mitchell proved decisive, as his movement and energy began to stretch the Hartlepool defence.
The breakthrough arrived when Murray surged forward and delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, where captain Mortimer finished emphatically to give Darlington a deserved lead.
With the advantage secured, Darlington continued to impress with their work rate and organisation. Murray, Gillan and Dawson were instrumental in midfield, breaking up play and ensuring Hartlepool were kept at arm’s length.
The victory was sealed in the 83rd minute following an excellent individual effort from Mortimer, who beat several defenders before producing a dangerous cross into the six-yard box. Mitchell reacted quickest to fire home and double the lead, putting the result beyond doubt.
Manager John Walters said; “It was a fantastic performance from the whole squad and they stuck to the game plan. Young players can be inconsistent, but tonight everyone was superb to a man. I’m very proud of the lads against a good Hartlepool side.”
