Darlington Town Mission is an independent charity that relies entirely on fund raising events, donations and legacies in order to continue our crucial work with the elderly in our local community. Every pound we collect goes towards alleviating isolation and making our “ Friends” enjoy happier lives. £10 will provide travel costs for one day of visiting friends £20 will provide lunch for 6 friends £50 will provide an afternoon outing for 8 friends If you’d like to find out more details on how to make a donation please go to www.darlingtontownmission. org.uk for details. Who are we? Darlington Town Mission was founded in 1838 by three local businessmen of Christian faith following the social principles of caring for the disadvantaged . Their faith in this action remains as part of the charity’s ethos today . Our charity provides a vital lifeline of companionship and practical help to many elderly residents in Darlington . More and more people are living longer and already more than one fifth of the population in Darlington are over retirement age . We believe that everyone is entitled to a good quality of life through fellowship and social support which helps combat isolation . Our charity is made up of an executive board of Trustees , a management committee and fund raising committee . We have a full time Missioner and a part time assistant Missioner who are assisted by a team of trusted volunteer visitors and drivers . We support a large group of our clients who we consider and refer to as our “ Friends “ .
What we do We understand that as we get older we may become isolated and alone. Sometimes our circle of friends may become less over time and our families may have moved away . Often older people have difficulties in getting out to do daily tasks and to socialise. Our charity provids a vital lifeline of companionship and practical help to many elderly people . Our Missioners help relieve loneliness by visiting our friends in their own homes or in care homes and in hospitals and also give practical advice and support. With the help of our volunteer drivers and visitors we also assist with medical appointments, shopping trips and other things when necessary. During 2019 our Missioners and volunteers made more that 1300 home visits to our friends .
