Come and see our new signings in action!
Tommy Wright made six new signings during the summer – and all of them will be in action in our forthcoming friendlies!
All of them have plenty of experience higher up the ladder, and Tommy is hoping that they will improve our chances of winning promotion.
Defender Jonny Burn is coming back to his home town club from League Two Bristol Rovers.
Jonny, 22, was born and brought up in the town, and started his career in the academy at Sunderland – keeper Jonny Maddison was there at the same time -- before switching to Middlesbrough where he became their Under 21 captain.
After loan spells at Oldham and Kilmarnock, he was released by Boro and joined Bristol Rovers on a permanent basis in January 2017. He made six appearances for Rovers in League One, before joining York City on loan in November 2017.
He played 21 times for York (one of them against Quakers in January) scoring three goals, before returning to Rovers, who released him in the summer.
Goalkeeper Jonny Maddison signed for us after he was released by League Two club Yeovil in June.
Jonny, 23, was born in Chester-le-Street and started his career at Sunderland. He was in their Academy until he was released in the summer of 2013. He moved to Crawley, who were then in League Two, and then moved on to the Development side at Leicester City. He was third choice at the club when they shocked everyone by winning the Premiership in 2016. He had a brief loan spell at Leamington in the National League North before moving on to Yeovil following his release by Leicester in the summer of 2016. He played 20 games for Yeovil, eleven of them in the second half of last season in League Two.
Defender turned striker Simon Ainge has moved from Harrogate Town, and comes to us with a great strike rate.
Simon started his career as a defender – and was a pretty good one -- and was converted into a striker when he was at Harrogate.
He started his career at Bradford City, playing for them 18 times in League One and League Two, before moving briefly to Bradford Park Avenue at the start of season 2009-10.
He then moved to Guiseley, and helped them win promotion from the Northern Premier League to Conference North (as was) and stayed with them until season 2012-13, making 134 appearances.
He moved to Luton Town in season 2012-13 , making 27 appearances, and then on to FC Halifax Town (64 appearances), before going back to Bradford PA halfway through the 2014-15 season.
He moved to Harrogate Town at the start of the 2016-17 season, and it was in January 2017 when he was converted to a striker, scoring 23 goals in the remainder of that season – he scored four in his first game as a striker against Alfreton -- and earned several awards. He scored 13 goals in 15 games in the 2017-18 season, but then he was injured and lost his place to the incoming Mark Beck.
Winger Alex Henshall has been at clubs much higher up the football ladder.
Alex, 24, began his career at Swindon Town, and turned down approaches from Manchester United – apparently he turned down their deal when he was in Sir Alex Ferguson’s office -- and Liverpool in order to sign for Manchester City.
He had four years at City without breaking into the first team, and had loan spells at Chesterfield, Bristol Rovers and Ipswich before joining Ipswich on a permanent basis.
He then went on to play for Kilmarnock, Margate, and Braintree before joining Nuneaton in the summer of 2017, when he joined forces with then-manager Tommy Wright. His appearances were restricted last season by injury, but he is now fully fit.
Alex has also been capped for England Under 16s and Under 17s.
Liam Hughes is a Wembley winner and scorer!
Liam, 25, is primarily an attacking midfielder who started his career at Cambridge, for whom he made 177 appearances in the National League and League Two, scoring 14 goals, and also played and scored for them in the National League play off final against Gateshead in 2014. He also played for Cambridge in their televised FA Cup tie against Manchester United at the Abbey Stadium in January 2015.
He then moved on to the Scottish Premiership with Inverness Caledonian Thistle in January 2016 and made 11 appearances for them, before returning to England and signing for Barrow, for whom he made 42 appearances in the National League.
After a brief spell at Guiseley, he then moved to Essex and joined Billericay, helping them to promotion from the Bostik League last season.
Liam can also play in the centre of defence and up front if necessary.
Jordan Nicholson comes to the club with an excellent goalscoring record in his career so far, and has worked with manager Tommy Wright previously at Nuneaton.
Jordan began his career as a reserve team player for Cambridge City, before a successful 2014–15 season in the United Counties League with Eynesbury Rovers. He joined Histon of the Southern League in summer 2015, where he scored 16 goals in the space of four months. He signed a contract with Peterborough United in 2015 and was loaned out to Nuneaton Town in August 2016 until the rest of the season but was recalled in March 2017. Jordan joined Nuneaton on loan again for the 2017-18 season when Tommy Wright was manager. Whilst at Nuneaton over two spells he scored 21 goals in 51 games. On 31 January 2018, he was recalled from loan and joined Barnet permanently from Peterborough, but then Barnet changed managers and he was loaned out to Brackley Town in March 2018 and played eight games for them.
