Kind words from Kevin Webber

Marathon Prostate Cancer man thanks Quakers

The club has a received a kind letter from Kevin Webber, who recently passed through Darlington on his near 200 mile marathon walk from Blyth to Halifax to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer.

Writing to the club’s Chief Executive Officer, David Johnston, he said; “I just wanted to drop you a line to thank you so much for the support that your club gave me when I arrived at Darlington.

“I realise that I am just an ordinary guy with an unfortunate terminal disease doing a charity walk and as such had no right to expect anything from your club just because I decided to turn up.

“Whilst the march was successful on so many levels, I wanted to tell you that without the greeting I received from Dave Watson, it would have made my solo 191 miles walk so much more mentally draining as he gave me a real lift. He then kindly drove me to meet the first team training and the manager, as a football fan it was a real privilege and honour to have a bit of their time.

“It’s easy to claim to be a community club but it was so clearly evident that is what Darlington FC is, I am also grateful for letting us park the motorhome in your car park overnight.

“Statistically, 12 per cent of your fans will get prostate cancer so I am grateful for helping raise awareness amongst your fans as a man dies every 45 minutes from this indiscriminate disease.

“I also hope that because of the shirt that you kindly gave me, that your own club benefitted in some way from what I did in terms of fan engagement, press and perhaps inspiring a little those who saw me as I wore it for around 50 miles of my walk from Spennymoor to York.”

The club would like to thank Kevin for his kind words, and should he need our help again, then we’ll do all we can to help him and the Prostate Cancer UK charity, whose website is here:
