National North Round-up  05/08/2019

The latest from around the league

We started our season with a 3-1 defeat at Farsley Celtic, Adam Campbell with his first competitive goal for the club in the second half.

League favourites York City started with an impressive 3-1 win at Altrincham. John Johnston had put Alty ahead early on, before an own goal brought York level. Ex-Quaker Joe Tait then put City with Jordan Burrow sealing the victory.

Curzon Ashton are the surprise league leaders after day one following a 5-0 win at home to Bradford Park Avenue. Isaac Sinclair, Luke Wall, Sean Miller, Olly Thornley and Luke Merrill scored the goals for the Nash.

Guiseley are second after a 3-0 win at home to league new boys Kings Lynn Town. Aaron Martin put the hosts ahead, before a double from Jamie Spencer in the second half guaranteed the three points.

Two of the well fancied teams this season are Hereford and Spennymoor Town. They held each other on Saturday to a 2-2 draw at Edgar Street. Our former man Jordan Nicholson put the Bulls ahead in the first half, before Andrew Johnson and Glen Taylor turned the game in the Brewers favour. However, just three minutes later Tom Owen-Evans levelled for Hereford.

Another two teams who are hoping to be in the mix are Boston United and Chester. They played out a 1-1 draw at the weekend. New signing Jordan Thewlis put Boston ahead, but George Waring scored for Chester less than five minutes later.

Blyth Spartans lost their opening game at home to Gloucester City who are back in the division after being moved from the National South. Joe Hanks put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot, with Marlon Jackson doubling the lead with ten minutes to go. Damen Mullen did pull one back straight away for Blyth, but it was not enough.

Kidderminster Harriers were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Leamington. Josh March put the Brakes ahead before half time, but two quick fire goals in the second half from Ashley Chambers and Ed Williams put Harriers 2-1 in front. However, despite going down to ten men Kaiman Anderson earned a late point for Leamington.

Kettering Town starting life in the National North with a 2-1 victory over Telford United following promotion. Stephan Morley had put Telford ahead on the stroke of half time, but Joel Carta brought Kettering level shortly after the break. Kettering then were reduced to ten men but still came away with the points thanks to Daniel Nti.

Last year’s playoff semi-finalists Brackley Town beat Alfreton Town 1-0 thanks to a goal from Shepherd Murombedzi.

In the final game of the weekend fellow North East side Gateshead were held to a 0-0 at home by Southport.
