A look back at matches played around the corresponding date in our history

In this series, we look back at matches in the club’s history played on or around the corresponding day in the club's history

February 26th 2011, FA Trophy quarter final

Darlington 2 Salisbury 1, attendance 1869

Before the game, Quakers had been labelled a pub team in a radio phone-in, and that tag was used a means of motivation by manager Mark Cooper.

It took a while to break down the Southern League side, but then Gary Smith blasted the ball home on 70 minutes after an Aaron Brown cross was cleared to him. A few minutes later it was 2-0 when Liam Hatch headed in a Smith cross. Salisbury pulled a goal back late in the game.

"We've been labelled a pub team in certain quarters, but we're not bad, are we?" said Cooper. "I just wish certain people would get behind the chairman and the players and make this a more positive place. An ex-player labelled us a pub team the other night, I'm led to believe. He was on the radio. I'm fed up with all the negativity.

"We knew they would make it difficult because that's what they had to do. That's we would do in the FA Cup if we were playing a team from a higher level. We knew they would tire a bit and we would get chances."

Darlington: Russell, Arnison, Miller, Burn, Brown (sub P Gray 75), Chandler, Verma, Smith, Bridge-Wilkinson, Hatch, Wright (sub Senior 65). Subs not used: St Louis-Hamilton, Moore, Main.

February 23rd 2008, League Two

Bury 1 Darlington 2, attendance 2554

We went into this game in third place in the table, having lost 2-1 at home to Mansfield the week before.

Guy N’Dumbu-N’Sungu, playing his first game since he returned to the club, put us in front from the penalty spot on three minutes after Ricky Ravenhill was fouled.

Quakers missed several more chances , but Micky Cummins made it 2-0 when the Bury defence failed to clear a corner.

Bury pulled a goal back with three minutes left, but that wasn’t enough to stop us recording a double over them, as we’d beaten them 3-0 the month before.

Darlington: Stockdale, Foster, Austin, Brackstone (sub Wiseman 82), Miller, Ravenhill, Cummins, Hodge, Joachim (sub Wainwright 46), Gall, N’Dumbu-N’Sungu (sub Abbott 80). Subs not used: Burgess, Kazimierczak

We went to Belle Vue on the back of a 2-2 draw at Hartlepool and defeats against Notts County and Mansfield. (Before that by the way, we had played Brighton and Swansea, who are both now in the Premiership)

Doncaster were bottom of the table at the time, and we were four points ahead of them.

“Super” Mario Dorner put Quakers in front on 41 minutes, with Paul Robinson – later to join Newcastle – adding the second five minutes from the end.

Team: Preece, Brumwell, Tutill, Liddle, Hope, Atkinson (sub Oliver 24), Resch (sub Crosby 80), Gaughan, Dorner, Shutt (sub Robinson 75), Naylor.
