In our Pic from the Past series, Craig Stoddart looks back at our FA Cup win over Chelsea in 1958. His piece was originally used in the Alfreton programme in early January.
It is 62 years this month since perhaps Darlington’s finest hour, the 4-1 win over Chelsea in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Pictured are ten members of the team which overcame the London club in a replay, played on January 29, 1958 at Feethams four days after drawing 3-3 at Stamford Bridge.
Darlington were near the bottom of the Third Division (North) when they travelled to Chelsea, who were mid-table in the old First Division, yet Quakers took a 3-0 lead with goals by Ron Harbertson, David Carr and Keith Morton before the Blues fought back.
“We were all really disappointed when we came off the field, " recalled Ron Greener in an interview with The Northern Echo. "Dickie Duckworth, the manager, saw our reaction and said it was the best result we could have had, that we'd got them back to our place and that we could beat them in front of our own supporters. How right he was.”
Though the replay kicked off at 2pm the following Wednesday, more than 15,000 filled Feethams.
An injury to Morton meant Scotsman Tommy Moran came into the side on the left wing and he scored after 35 minutes, John McNichol equalising three minutes later for Chelsea, who had dropped Jimmy Greaves for the replay.
After 90 minutes it was still 1-1. Moran, Wheatley Hill pit bricklayer Dave Carr and centre forward Ron Harbertson scored three goals between them in extra-time.
The Northern Echo reported at the time: “In the whole history of the club, there has been nothing like the scenes at the end of the game.”
Darlington’s team for the replay against Chelsea: Turner, Green, Henderson, Rutherford, Greener, Furphy, Carr, Milner, Harbertson, Bell, Moran.
