In our latest Pic from the Past, Craig Stoddart remembers Terry Galbraith, who left the club last week
Terry Galbraith reached a landmark at Blackwell Meadows, making his 300th appearance for Darlington in the 3-0 win against Alfreton Town.
It was the 163rd Quakers win Terry had played in, 60 of his games being draws, since joining in November 2012 from Dunston and making his debut away to Newton Aycliffe (pictured).
Six months earlier he had won the FA Vase at Wembley with Dunston against West Auckland, when he was team-mates with Liam Connell, and went on to enjoy lots of success with Darlington – being a part of three promotion-winning teams and making a significant contribution in several positions.
Martin Gray knew he was bringing in a versatile player and gave him his debt at left-back, replacing Dan Smith in the starting XI for a defeat against Newton Aycliffe, but he soon switched to the centre of midfield.
Later in his Quakers career Galbraith was used at left back and these days is considered to be a central defender, while he is the team captain too.
Gray said after signing him: “He can also play left wing or centre midfield, but we're bringing him in to play left back. It's an area we wanted to strengthen. He's very quick and has got good technique and is very good at setpieces.
"He scores goals from setpieces and general play - he scored a penalty at the weekend against Hebburn. We've had him watched a few times and his all-round game is very good."
Galbraith was 22 at the time of his arrival, and Gray added: “One of the big attractions to me was that the player wants to play at a higher level. He's very ambitious, as ambitious as Darlington Football Club.”
For several seasons Galbraith was a regular scorer and has 57 goals to his name, probably the most memorable and important being the equaliser from outside the penalty area away to Spennymoor Town in a crucial 3-1 win in February 2013.
He netted both goals in a satisfying 2-0 win over West Auckland at Heritage Park, there was a hat-trick away to Harrogate RA in February 2015, and one of his 29 penalties came in the unforgettable title-clinching 7-1 win at Whitby Town.
